While running in gym class recently, my daughter dislocated her kneecap; we’re talking sticking-out-of-the-side-of-her-leg dislocated (sorry to gross you out with the details). Luckily, I was close to school when I got the call so I could ride in the ambulance with her to the hospital. After a full day of doctors, nurses, painkillers, procedures and splinting, we were ready to head home. Thank goodness my husband picked us up in the 2012 Mazda5 rather than the 2012 Volkswagen Beetle that I was also test-driving that week.

My daughter’s blinged-out pink-and-black splint (her nurse was also a skilled dad to three little girls) went from toe to thigh. With it, there’s no way she and her splint could have fit in the Beetle’s limited backseat. The Mazda5’s sliding side doors and captain’s chairs in the second row helped to accommodate our daughter, her cast and crutches.
The Mazda5’s low step-in height also was extremely helpful. It was at just the right level so my daughter could slide herself in after grabbing the armrest of her seat with one hand and the driver-seat head restraint with the other. Her splinted leg was then able to rest gingerly atop the center console area between the driver and front passenger’s seat.

If not for the Mazda5 the past couple of weeks, we would have had to borrow a friend’s minivan to cart my daughter around in. What will we do in a couple of months when our long-term test drive ends? We’re crossing our fingers for no more dislocated kneecaps for starters! Is it time to bite the bullet and buy a Mazda5 of our own?
